SUMMARY:With Joell Leandre and Dana Reason
DESCRIPTION:Confluence Visiting Artist Series presents \nJoëlle Léandre & Dana Reason \nfollowed by ensemble performances including local musicians:\nJuniana Lanning (electronics)\nDoug Theriault (electronics/guitar)\nDoug Detrick (trumpet)\nJonathan Sielaff (bass clarinet)\nAndrew Jones (double bass)\nKen Ollis (drums)\n\nFriday\, February 13\, 7:30 pm doors\, 8 pm show\nRedeemer Lutheran Church\, 5431 NE 20th Ave.\n(503)287-7553\n$12 – 20 sliding scale. All ages. \nThe Creative Music Guild’s Confluence Visiting Artist Series presents French bassist\, vocalist and composer Joëlle Léandre. Beginning with a duo set by Léandre and local pianist Dana Reason\, the night will continue with Léandre and Reason joining local musicians Juniana Lanning\, Doug Theriault\, Doug Detrick\, Jonathan Sielaff\, Andrew Jones and Ken Ollis for several sets of improvisational ensemble performance. \nJoelle Leandre \nFrench double bass player\, improviser and composer\, Joëlle Léandre is one of the dominant figures of the new European music. Trained in orchestral as well as contemporary music\, she has played with l’Itinéraire\, 2e2m and Pierre Boulez’s Ensemble Intercontemporain. Joëlle Léandre has also worked with Merce Cunningham and with John Cage\, who has composed especially for her – as have Scelsi\, Fénelon\, Hersant\, Lacy\, Campana\, Jolas\, Clementi and about 40 composers. \nAs well as working in contemporary music\, Léandre has played with some of the great names in jazz and improvisation\, such as Derek Bailey\, Anthony Braxton\, George Lewis\, Evan Parker\, Irene Schweizer\, William Parker\, Barre Phillips\, Pascal Contet\, Steve Lacy\, Lauren Newton\, Peter Kowald\, Urs Leimgruber\, Mat Maneri\, Roy Campbell\, Fred Frith\, John Zorn\, Mark Naussef\, Marilyn Crispell\, India Cooke and so many others… \nShe has written extensively for dance and theater\, and has staged a number of multidisciplinary performances. She got the DAAD at Berlin\, is welcomed as artist resident at Villa Kujiyama (Kyoto). In 2002\, 2004 and 2006\, she is Visiting Professor at Mills college\, Oakland\, CA\, Chaire Darius Milhaud\, for improvisation and composition. Her work as a composer and a performer\, both in solo recitals and a part of ensembles\, has put her under the lights of the most prestigious stages of Europe\, the Americas and Asia. \nFrom 1981 to 2009\, Joëlle Léandre has about 150 recordings to her credit. (www.joelle-leandre.com) \nDana Reason \nDana Reason is a Canadian-born pianist\, composer/improviser and musicologist. Reason was part of The Space Between trio with Pauline Oliveros and is documented on over 14 commercial recordings. Her research is available on Wesleyan University Press and Columbia Jazz-Studies On-line. Reason holds a B.Mus (McGill University); MA in Composition (Mills College); and Ph.D in Critical Studies/Experimental Practices\, UC San Diego. Her main teachers include: George E. Lewis\, Pauline Oliveros\, Alcides Lanza\, Alvin Curran\, Aleck Karis and Anthony Davis. She teaches courses on music composition and is currently the director Popular Music Studies at Oregon State University. (www.danareason.com) \nJuniana Lanning\nJuniana Lanning began studying computer music composition under Mary Lee Roberts\, Henry Gwiazda\, and James Harley. From their influence\, she became fascinated with the digital manipulation of found sounds and the creation of sonic paintings. It wasn’t until the formation Seven Engines\, her duo with tape manipulator Kyle Bouchard\, that this practice moved from the controlled environment of the recording studio into a more real-time improv performance. \nAfter receiving a music degree from Minnesota State University\, Moorhead\, Juniana became a mother and freelance recording engineer\, while continuing to collect myriad sounds from her local environment and shape them into sonic sculptures. She has continued to collaborate with Kyle Bouchard\, as well as artists such as Simone Pitot\, Justin Smith\, Doug Theriault\, The Demolition Duo\, and Vacilando. \nIn 2013 she worked with Doug Theriault in recording sounds for dancer Linda Austin’s “Three Trick Pony\,” and in 2014 composed a sound score for Austin’s performance piece\, “Hummingbird.” Juniana is currently recording engineer at Fluff and Gravy Studios here in Portland\, Ore. \nDoug Theriault\nDoug Theriault is a long time Northwest improviser\, composer and instrument builder. (http://www.dougtheriault.org/) \nDoug Detrick\nDouglas Detrick is a Portland\, Oregon-based composer\, trumpet player\, and arts consultant whose work in these diverse areas is distinguished by its quiet thoughtfulness and its embrace of good ideas from unconventional sources. He was awarded the 2011 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works and Presenting Jazz grants for his work with his chamber-jazz quintet Douglas Detrick’s AnyWhen Ensemble\, and the commissioned work “The Bright and Rushing World” was premiered at New York’s Jazz Gallery in 2012\, performed throughout the United States\, and released on CD with Parma Recordings in 2014. He is currently the Executive Director of the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble\, and performs in Portland\, Oregon as well as touring nationally. (http://www.douglasdetrick.com/) \nJonathan Sielaff\nJonathan Sielaff resides in Portland\, OR and plays the bass clarinet. Because he likes to play with drummers and electronic instruments\, he often amplifies the bass clarinet and processes it with guitar pedals (he is also\, conveniently\, a guitarist).\nHe cut his musical teeth in rock bands\, new music ensembles and various schools of improvisation but most enjoys exploring the territory that exists between genres. His primary musical project is the duo Golden Retriever\, with Matt Carlson on synth. They have a bunch of tapes and CDs out there as well as albums with Root Strata and Thrill Jockey. (http://www.thrilljockey.com/thrill/Golden-Retriever) \nAndrew Jones\nAndrew Jones is a musician working in Portland\, OR where he composes\, arranges and plays in a wide variety of musical contexts primarily on electric and double bass. Before relocating to Portland from Arizona he performed and/or recorded with musicians as varied as LA drummer/performance artist Corey Fogel (Missincinatti\, The Mae Shi\, Gowns\, Julia Holter\, Cryptacize)\, Tokyo-based pianist Jacob Koller\, jazz vocalist Dennis Rowland (Count Basie)\, downtempo electronica artist Coppe and began doing recurring US/European tours alongside theremin virtuoso Pamelia Kurstin with Brooklyn Art-rockers Barbez. \nSince moving to the NW he’s performed and/or recorded with the Blake Lyman trio\, Andrew Durkin’s Protohuman\, Portland Cello Project\, Boy and Bean\, Portland psych-folk outfit Egg Plant\, Cameron Morgan Trio\, Scott Cutshall’s Phraseology\, Noah Bernstein\, Ryan Meagher\, Lee Elderton\, Ryan Miller and Pinkish. He’s also spearheaded a local chapter of the Immersion Composition Society reluctantly dubbed Stallion Pussy Lodge and plays his own music for voice\, electronics and double bass under the name The Crenshaw. (www.soundcloud.com/thecrenshaw) \nKen Ollis\nKen Ollis is a drummer and composer from Portland\, OR. He has performed extensively throughout the US\, Canada\, and Europe\, and has played with a variety of musicians including: Kenny Werner\, Ingrid Jensen\, Julian Priester\, The Drifters\, Bud Shank\, John Stowell\, Darrell Grant\, John Gross\, Dan Balmer\, Chata Addy\, Rob Blakeslee\, Rich Halley\, Glen Moore\, and many others. \nMost recently\, his projects have included work with Dominique Eade\, Heather Masse (from The Wailin’ Jennys)\, Aoife O’Donovan (from Crooked Still)\, Pepe and The Bottle Blondes\, Paxselin Quartet\, and several other groups. Ken also regularly performs in collaboration with painters\, poets\, dancers\, and cinematographers. His compositions are featured in the repertoire of the Paxselin Quartet\, the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble\, PDX Ensemble\, The Chamber of Commerce\, and in his own groups. (www.kenollis.com) \nThe Creative Music Guild is a Portland\, Oregon all-volunteer\, non-profit organization whose mission is to promote experimental\, improvised music by presenting concerts\, workshops and other events that bring together internationally recognized musicians with local performers\, audiences and music students of all ages. For over twenty years\, the CMG has been a leader in cultivating Portland’s experimental and improvised music. \nConfluence\, our visiting artist series\, is where the CMG started back in 1991 with bringing the best improvisers in the world to Portland. We present 6-8 concerts a year by artists from all over the world at venues around Portland. Our programming committee carefully curates this series taking into account diversity (both musical diversity as well as gender & ethnic diversity)\, quality and recognition (extremely high quality of craft is a given and some degree of critical and/or community recognition within the creative improvisation scene is crucial) and the ability of the musicians to come to Portland without our help (we generally don’t get involved in concerts that would happen without us).

SUMMARY:Cartography Trio with Syrinx Effect @ The Jazz Station — Eugene\, OR
DESCRIPTION:Douglas Detrick’s Cartography Trio and Syrinx Effect perform at the Jazz Station in Eugene: Portland-based trio and Seattle-based duo bring the best in technology-aided improvisation and acoustic roots-jazz together in a concert at Eugene’s most intimate jazz venue. \n8 pm — April 18\, 2014\nThe Jazz Station\n124 W. Broadway\nEugene OR 97401 \nThis concert will be an exciting collaboration with the Seattle-based Syrinx Effect\, and the two groups will combine for a few pieces\, for an exciting blend of old and new with plenty of surprises. The Syrinx Effect plays music that has beautiful\, abstract poetry built into it\, even as they improvise music without words. As their music looks to the future in the form of technology\, Cartography Trio’s music looks to the past. Blues\, gospel\, and ballads come together with jazz and chamber music sophistication in the trio’s music. These two groups will work together to create an evening that will blur the lines between the past and the future\, and between acoustic and electronic sounds. \nHear music samples at http://thesyrinxeffect.bandcamp.com/ and http://youtu.be/9To2GD9TSZo. \n\n  \nDouglas Detrick\, a University of Oregon-trained trumpeter and composer\, spent four years in Eugene. During that time he did a master’s degree at the U of O; formed the Eugene Jazz Composer’s Orchestra\, the jazz group Douglas Detrick Quintet\, improvisation group Any Permutation\, and his still-thriving chamber-jazz quintet Douglas Detrick’s AnyWhen Ensemble that continues to tour throughout the country and will release its third full-length album on March 25th; and also served on the board of the Willamette Jazz Society as it planned its move into its current\, larger space. \nAfter his busy years in Eugene\, he moved to New York where he continued to work with AnyWhen Ensemble\, but also began exploring the intersection of American roots music with jazz and classical music\, with what he calls a “chamber-folk” ensemble. This project has always taken on different instrumentations\, from solo to quartet\, and this time he’ll be joined by guitarist Bill Marsh and drummer Barra Brown\, to form a talented and dynamic group of young exciting improvisers who can bring the drama out of the folk material. After moving back to Portland in the winter of 2013\, Detrick has convened a group with some his favorite Portland-based players. \nDouglas Detrick’s Cartography draws a map of the landscape of American music\, from gospel to blues to traditional ballads through creative arrangements and original compositions drawing on Detrick’s background in jazz and chamber music. The newest of Detrick’s many musical projects\, ranging from a big band to the chamber-jazz quintet AnyWhen Ensemble\, this group continues his commitment to the blending of jazz with chamber music\, this time inspired by the many channels of the American folk tradition. This ensemble has taken on several forms ranging from solo performances\, duos\, trios and quartets\, all featuring the composing\, arranging\, singing and trumpet playing of its founder and leader. \nSyrinx Effect is Kate Olson and Naomi Siegel – a duo that is on the forefront of contemporary\, improvised chamber music with electronics. Naomi plays trombone with guitar pedals and Kate plays soprano saxophone with laptop and other toys. The duo got their start curating the Racer Sessions in Seattle\, and perform in the Seattle area and around the country\, collaborating with many of the mainstays of the Northwest jazz and improvised music scenes. \nSyrinx Effect makes music that is authentic and expressive\, employing everything from simple folk melodies to abstract\, ambient noise. Each piece is a meditation\, an exploration\, and sometimes a romp.  The duo has played in the Earshot Jazz Festival multiple times\, the Seattle Women in Jazz Festival and has toured around the East Coast and Northwest.  Kate and Naomi collaborate with many musicians such as Wayne Horvitz\, Rene Hart\, Allison Miller\, Jason Levis (Berlin-based drummer and composer)\, and Daniel Barry \n  \n#### \nFor more information or images contact Douglas Detrick\n(503)347-1416 or douglasdetrick@gmail.com \n

SUMMARY:AnyWhen Ensemble: Ishmael and the Whale @ Neighborhood Church of Greenwich Village
DESCRIPTION:Poster by Rashad Assadullahi\nChamber-Jazz group Douglas Detrick’s AnyWhen Ensemble and actor Ren Jackson \nperform “Ishmael and the Whale: A collision of Moby Dick and the Book of Jonah through words and music.” \nAlso performing Sidney Boquiren’s Pax Vobiscum and movements from Douglas Detrick’s The Bright and Rushing World. \nPresented by Spark and Echo Arts\nsparkandecho.org \nSaturday\, March 8th — 8 pm\nAll Things Project\, The Neighborhood Church of Greenwich Village\n269 Bleecker St.\, New York\, New York 10014\n212.691.1770 \nFree Admission\, donations accepted. Please RSVP below. \n[art-event id=”2727″] \nComposer/Trumpeter/Writer Douglas Detrick brings together his chamber-jazz quintet AnyWhen Ensemble with actor Warren Jackson to take a creative yet critical look at how the story of Jonah and the Whale imbues Moby Dick with spiritual mystery and raises a simple narrative to an epic level. \nMoby Dick is often thought of as the first great American novel\, and the balance of Ahab’s primal motivation for revenge with high spiritual themes is a prime reason for this. Inspired by the creative radio documentary series Radio Lab\, actor Warren Jackson will perform a text by Douglas Detrick that weaves together the book of Jonah with chapter 9 of Moby Dick — where Melville retells the book of Jonah — in a style that blends critical\, journalistic inquiry with a healthy sense of humor and a gratifying enthusiasm for the original texts. \nAt this early point in the novel\, the presence of this tale of humility and repentance opens the door to an underpinning of deep religious significance in every twist and turn of the plot. The accompanying music\, also by Detrick and performed by him with his AnyWhen Ensemble\, will support and expand on the text\, helping to bridge the gap between the two original works and between ancient and contemporary audiences by calling on both composed and improvised music to bring an unexpected range of expression to this piece. \nAlso on the program will be movements from Detrick’s 10-movement suite The Bright and Rushing World\, a piece that was commissioned by Chamber Music America and will be released on a new recording with Parma Recordings on March 24th. \nBiographies: \nWarren Jackson\, known lovingly to many simply as Ren\, hails from Indianapolis. This Midwest kid was reared in the Baptist church rooted in the tradition of home-folks from South Carolina and Alabama\, and sprinkled with a bit of A.M.E. He grew up in the church with strong examples from his family members who served in several ways. Fostered by an enriching Sunday school experience\, coupled with the supportive environment of attending a small primary and secondary school\, led to opportunities to publish poems in University publications\, a text book\, and engage in spoken-word forums. \nSince arriving in New York via Chicago\, Ren has focused on his theater career\, becoming a company member of Brave New World Repertory. He is currently in an original piece at Premiere Stages and will also be seen in a revival of Thornton Wilder’s THE LONG CHRISTMAS DINNER this winter. He received nominations for his work from the Black Theater of Alliance of Chicago for Best Featured Actor\, in Victory Garden’s world premiere of SHOES\, and from the regional Emmy board for his ensemble work on Chicago children’s television show\, GREEN SCREEN ADVENTURES. He earned his MFA at the University of Arizona. \nDouglas Detrick is a Portland\, Oregon-based composer\, trumpet player\, and writer whose work in these diverse areas is distinguished by its quiet thoughtfulness and its embrace of good ideas from unconventional sources. He was awarded the 2011 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works and Presenting Jazz grants for his work with his chamber-jazz quintet Douglas Detrick’s AnyWhen Ensemble\, and the commissioned work “The Bright and Rushing World” was premiered at New York’s Jazz Gallery in 2012 and performed throughout the United States. Since joining the New York community in 2010 he has performed at the Stone\, Jazz Gallery\, and Issue Project Room\, performed new music by Christian Wolff with the composer and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company at its farewell performance at the Park Avenue Armory\, and joined the curatorial team of Dave Douglas’ Festival of New Trumpet Music. \nThe AnyWhen Ensemble’s signature instrumentation sets it apart\, but it makes its real impact through bold new compositions that integrate chamber music conception with jazz spontaneity. The AnyWhen Ensemble was awarded the New Jazz Works and Presenting Jazz grant from Chamber Music America in 2011. This extremely competitive grant commissioned a new work by Detrick called The Bright and Rushing World\, an ambitious addition to this singular composer’s list of accomplishments. A recording of this work will be released March 25\, 2014 on Parma Recordings. \nThe group has performed at the Jazz Gallery and the Stone in New York\, and on festivals including the Festival of New Trumpet Music curated by Dave Douglas\, and the Is That Jazz? Festival in Seattle\, WA curated by Tom Baker. The group has also performed and given master classes at colleges across the country including Cornish College of the Arts\, University of Wisconsin Stevens Point\, University of Oregon\, and Willamette University. \nThe AnyWhen Ensemble is Douglas Detrick\, composition and trumpet; Hashem Assadullahi\, saxophone; Shirley Hunt\, cello; Steve Vacchi\, bassoon; and Ryan Biesack and drums. \n#### \nFor more information contact\nDouglas Detrick — (503)347-1416 or douglasdetrick@gmail.com\ndouglasdetrick.com/anywhen\nsparkandecho.org \n
